In the month of May, Chris McCue, President & CEO of McCue Engineering Contractors, enthusiastically participated in the annual Mining for Miracles Pie Throw event to support the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. This event brought together twelve teams from different industries, with our team participating in the Manufacturer’s Pie category. The collective goal was to raise $1,300,000 at the Pie Throw to support the creation of the Precision Health Initiative (PHI) at BC Children’s Hospital.
The Pie Throw stands as the B.C. mining industry’s prominent fundraising event in support of BCCH. Year after year, leaders from various sectors within the industry are paired together in a friendly competition to raise funds. The participants who manage to raise the most money earn the privilege of throwing a cream pie at their competitor. This year, the target was set at $1,300,000 to assist in the establishment of the Precision Health Initiative (PHI) at BC Children’s
ABOUT THE 2023 MINING FOR MIRACLES CAMPAIGN
Mining For Miracles serves as a partnership between BC’s mining industry and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, where both the mining community and associated industries join forces to raise funds for critical healthcare needs of children in our province. Since 1988, M4M has successfully raised over $37 million, with 100% of the funds going directly to support the hospital, free of overhead expenses.
In 2023, M4M launched a three-year commitment to raise $3.58 million for the BC Children’s Hospital’s Precision Health Initiative. This initiative embodies cutting-edge medical research and aims to enhance the hospital’s ability to provide answers and hope to children with previously undiagnosed conditions. Through the initiative, new information and opportunities for families who have been on long diagnostic journeys will be provided.
During the Manufacturer’s Pie competition, Chris McCue was paired against Tyler James from Rimex, resulting in a challenging battle.
However, Chris, not being a fan of pie, came up with a creative strategy to avoid being pied. He decided that PANAQUA our containerized water treatment product line by McCue Engineering Contractors, would be renamed “PieNAQUA” for the month of May, aligning with his efforts to raise funds. Through the generosity of friends, family, corporations, and the mining community, Chris managed to raise an impressive amount of $5,691.00, narrowly securing his victory.
In total, Tyler James and Chris McCue raised over $10,000 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation!

Together, the participants of the 2023 Pie Throw event, along with the B.C. mining community, shattered the previous fundraising record by raising a remarkable $1,964,834 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation!
This unprecedented fundraising total will contribute to providing answers and hope to children with previously undiagnosed conditions through the BCCH Precision Health.
